Yeast Infections And Modern Life: Do They Go Hand In Hand?

Yeast infections are becoming more and more common within our society. It’s also a sad fact that our diet has changed over the past years and not necessarily for the best. One of the causes of yeast infection is poor diet. This article questions whether yeast infections and modern society are inexplicably linked.

Candida albicans is a yeast fungi naturally present in the human body. It has many beneficial purposes including helping to maintain the balance of the gut. A yeast infection, also know as candidiasis or thrush, is caused when there is an overgrowth of this particular strain of yeast in the body. Large numbers of people experience yeast infections with statistics saying 75% of the population will have at least one yeast infection in their lives. Is this huge number down to the way we live our lives?

There is a possible explanation for the amount of people experiencing yeast infections. Poor dietary choices are amongst the main causes of yeast infections. In our modern society we eat a lot of refined carbohydrates and processed foodstuffs. The sugar present in white flour, white rice and sugar provides ideal food for the candida yeast strain. Combine this with a lowered immune system from not eating enough fresh fruit and vegetables and you have a perfect breeding ground for yeast cultures.

We turn to quick convenient ways to help us cope with the demands placed upon us by the stress and strain of modern day living. Why spend hours in the kitchen when we can throw something in the oven that’ll be ready in half and hour? Why bother cooking at all when we can get a takeaway? 200, 500, 1000 years ago there were no convenience foods at all. People ate a much more simpler diet relying more on natural foodstuffs. It makes you wonder if yeast infections were as common then as now.

Whilst our standard of material living may have increased since then, we have neglecting our healthy living. As we all know, yeast infections are not the only side effect of an unhealthy diet. There are other more common, far more dangerous problems. Yeast infections could be one way that our bodies are crying out to let us know that our imbalance in modern life needs addressing.
